James F. McDonald
Since 1993, Jim McDonald has led Scientific Atlanta as it provides a
comprehensive array of products, systems and services for cable and telco operators,
programmers and broadcasters as they deliver entertainment and information to
their customers around the world. From digital content distribution systems and
transmission networks for broadband access to the home, to digital interactive
set-tops, cable modems and subscriber systems, and worldwide customer service
and support, Scientific Atlanta provides end-to-end solutions for video, data
and voice services.
McDonald came to Scientific Atlanta from J. H. Whitney, where he was a general
partner responsible for venture capital investments in high tech companies. From
1984 to 1991 he served as president and CEO of Prime Computer, and president,
CEO and Chairman of Gould, Inc. where he lead successful restructuring of both
organizations and, ultimately, the sale of Gould. During his 21 years with IBM,
he was instrumental in the development of copiers, laser printers, and other
office systems and computer systems. At IBM, he was responsible for research
laboratories in Colorado and Florida, and at the time he left IBM in 1984, he
was general manager of the Manufacturing Systems Products Business.
A graduate of the University of Kentucky, where he played basketball under Coach
Adolph Rupp, McDonald holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in electrical
engineering. He holds patents in image processing and communications.
In 1999, McDonald received the National Cable Television Association’s Vanguard
Award, which recognizes outstanding achievements by leaders of the cable
industry. McDonald is a director of a number of companies and service
organizations including Scientific Atlanta, Burlington Resources, Mirant
Corporation, and NDC Health. He is a member of the Emory University Business
School’s Goizueta Advisory Council, Development Council of the University of
Kentucky, University of Kentucky’s Business School Advisory Council, University
of Kentucky’s College of Engineering Dean’s Council, Board of Councilors of the
Carter Center, and Trustee of the Woodruff Arts Center.
